Is it safe to eat raw brownie batter?

Traditional brownie recipes call for raw eggs and flour, which is risky and not safe to eat. This recipe is eggless and the flour has been heat-treated so it’s safe to eat!

Is heat-treated flour safe to eat?

Brownies are often made with flour and flour is a food that has the potential to contain bacteria, which could make you sick. But don’t worry, because if you heat-treat your flour before baking, it will kill off any harmful bacteria. After that, it becomes safe for consumption and I strongly recommend doing this step before preparing your favorite brownie batter!

What is the best way to heat-treat flour?

To heat treat the flour, measure out the amount in the recipe plus some extra (about ⅓ cup for this recipe) and microwave it for about 1-2 minutes. If you don’t have a microwave, you can also pour it onto a baking sheet and bake it for 5 minutes at 350°F.

Can you make cannabis brownie batter using boxed brownie mix?

Yes! First, mix up the medicated butter until it’s a liquid. Then, add a mix of boxed brownie mix and milk until it reaches the desired consistency. Feel free to add in any other ingredients you like afterward.

Store and Freeze your Cananbis Edible Brownie Batter

You can store your dough in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 7 days. Once it’s been refrigerated, it will firm up, so I like to scoop out however much I want to eat and let that sit out for 15-20 minutes before I eat it.

If you want to freeze brownie batter, form the dough into a ball and wrap it in plastic wrap. Place the ball of dough in a Ziploc bag and freeze for up to 2 months.

If you want to refrigerate in smaller portions, follow the same process with the dough – it’s always easier with smaller balls. If the batter needs to harden a bit before rolling into a ball, just pop it in the fridge for a few hours before freezing.

Tips by Cannabis Industry Experts

Once you’ve heated the flour, let it cool before adding it to the bowl with the wet ingredients.

This recipe is forgiving, so if the dough seems too crumbly and not stretchy, add in a bit of milk. And if you accidentally add too much milk to the dough, just add some more flour!
