Michigan became a legalized marijuana state on December 6th, 2018.
The legality issues are causing a slow roll-out. The first sales at a dispensary for those who were 21 and up happened on November 30th, 2019.
Very little to no edibles sold on that day. I will explain where to buy edibles in Michigan in this article, but I want to clarify some things first.
But where can you buy edibles in Michigan?
A Bit of Michigan Edible History
Let me tell you a little story about where to buy edibles in Michigan…. In 2008, Michigan started its caregiver system, and those with unique cards started growing legal marijuana. Shortly after that, people began opening up caregiver stores so that if a caregiver had extra product, they could help out someone else's patient. Or if someone's caregiver didn't make edibles, someone else could get edibles from the caregiver store.
Eventually, these stores just started calling themselves dispensaries. Anyone with a medical marijuana card could go and purchase marijuana from these facilities.
Unfortunately, not any of it was legal in the eyes of Michigan. It was just the fate of what the people wanted and needed. More and more people were choosing marijuana as their medicine, and having a central place to buy that medicine made the most sense. The Michigan legal system finally full stopped all of these "illegal" but necessary shops around 2018 when they started to hand out licenses to those who could afford to pay the fees. They shut down anyone who didn't get permission from the state, and now we are left with only licensed dispensaries.
Medical Marijuana Hayday
So, to buy edibles in Michigan in 2017, you would have to have a medical marijuana card, and you would be able to go into a dispensary that had some excellent options for you to medicate. Since everything JUST was legalized in the eyes of the state, most of that option has dwindled to nothing. The state of Michigan now requires some rigorous testing to get into a dispensary. Not only does the cannabis grow have to pass a long list of tests, so does the cannabis oil and then the edibles. These lists are long and hard to pass, and most cannot do it.
If someone is operating and do have a license, they are facing hardships as well because it takes so long to get the food item through the rigorous testing system. Also, most of those who have licenses are greedy owners who have dollar signs in their eyes and have never been in the cannabis game before, so they don't know the first thing about making cannabis edibles.
The cannabis oil that does pass the tests is hard to find. Not much cannabis is being grown legally in Michigan. The number of grams needed to make a full edible testing batch can be almost a hundred processed indoor marijuana plants. Getting the main ingredient to make legal cannabis edibles is tough!
So, where can you buy edibles in Michigan?
If you want to be completely legit, you can try your local medical dispensary.
Michigan Recreational Dispensaries that have edibles:
Since the first sales of recreational marijuana on November 30th 2019, there could possibly be edibles that have made it through the system and that processors have held just to be in the recreational game. BUT, I would not bank on it and I would investigate the edible situation before driving to a recreational dispensary to buy edibles.
We say these places "might have edibles" because, there is a product shortage in the industry in general. Make sure to call these places before you drive to find edibles in Michigan!
What can you do right now?
I would call your local edible maker. You can give them a donation for up to 15 grams of cannabis oil and not get in trouble as an adult 21 and over. ALWAYS make sure to talk to your lawyer though, since we are not giving legal advice but just stating what our personal interpenetration of the law is. You should also make sure you know the edible maker is reputable as well, The state of Michigan put in all of these rigorous tests to keep everyone safe. But the facts are no one has ever died from cannabis alone. Disclaimer; we are not responsible if for any harm done by this action if you choose to go through this route.
In the next five years or so, you should have more options when it comes to recreational marijuana edibles or medical cannabis edibles, but for right now, buying edibles in Michigan is a pain!
